Effect of Cadmium Intoxication on Renal Glucose Transport System

Abstract
1
Effect of cadmium intoxication on the renal glucose transport system was studied. Subcutaneous injections of CdCl©ü(2§· Cd/§¸.day) for 2-3weeks induced marked polyuria, glycosuria, and proteinuria without altering the glomerular filtration rate. In the renal cortical brush border membrane vesicles isolated from cadmium-treated rats, the Na+ -dependent D-glucose uptake was markedly attenuated, and this was due to the reduction in Vmax and not Km. On the other hand, the Na+ independent uptake of glucose was not apparently altered. In the basolateral membrane vesicles, the uptake and the efflux of D-glucose was not significantly affected by cadmium treatment.
These results indicated that cadmium intoxication impairs the Na+ -glucose contransport system in the brush border membrane of renal proximal tubular cell.
